My recipe for a healthy green smoothie
Over the summer, I developed a bit of an addiction to smoothies and açaí bowls from a local shop, South Block walking distance from my apartment. My favorite green smoothie on their menu is the, Super Green. It is a healthy blend of greens and fruit. I somehow convinced myself that because it was a healthy treat it was money worth spent. I quickly realized that I could easily experiment in my own kitchen at home with the Nutribullet that had been tucked away in my cupboard for the past two years. So I decided to test some options and over the course of a week I perfected what has easily become my go-to smoothie.
Smoothies are such a great, healthy, pick-me-up mid-morning or afternoon snack. Even though I often use smoothies as a way to get rid of vegetables or fruit that are on their last leg, this is my go-to recipe that I keep coming back to. It’s refreshing, tangy, and sweet. I love this recipe because it doesn’t taste like I’m drinking grass or something covered in dirt.
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- 1 1/2 cups of greens (I use a spinach and kale blend)
- 1/2 cup of frozen mango
- 1/2 cup of 100% pineapple juice
- 1-2 cups of cold water (based on preference)
- 2-3 ice cubes
Customize
This is the essence of my favorite green smoothie but if you want to add a few additional nutrients, I often add 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds, flax seeds or bee pollen. I would not recommend including protein powder in this particular smoothie but I’ll upload another recipe shortly that is a perfect, protein-packed, green, post-workout smoothie.
